Hello! My name is Natalie Burns and I'm a multidisciplinary visual artist, illustrator, and writer with a deep love of narrative and storytelling. This portfolio site features some of my best academic, professional, and personal projects.
I love creating works of fantasy, coming up with worlds, characters, and scenes, and have written and illustrated three books. I keep a sketchbook and notebook on me at all times for observational drawing and collecting imagery and ideas to inspire my creative explorations. Conceptually I'm very interested in the universal human experience of loneliness and find that it flavors much of my work. My most recent solo show was a collection of my work dealing with loneliness.
I'm interested in a long list of mediums (painting, drawing, digital art, photography, filmmaking, collage, printmaking, fiber arts, ceramics, creative writing, interactive media etc, etc.), but what ties them together for me is narrative. While illustration is my primary expressive method, I'm really interested in telling stories with whatever medium most fits the story. I also love the versatility of working in both traditional and digital processes and nearly all of my work combines elements of both.
When I'm not making art or writing I love swimming and dancing, reading an excessive amount of fiction, and getting up to shenanigans with any or all of my eight siblings. I'm a big music nerd and love traveling with my uncle who is also an independent artist (@art.jasonburns on Instagram).
